Default B & Bs

Friends who stayed at Casa Calderoni a few years ago showed us their rooms and they were indeed lovely. Each one was around the theme of an artist, in the colors and feel of that artist's work with prints from that artist. I remember their first room they were offered was around $75 (this was a few years ago) and they felt it was too small so they upgraded to a room that was around $90--again those prices are undoubtedly higher now. (I just checked their website--rooms start at $110 to $140 today.)

A few days ago we finally got around to visiting Casa Maricela at 41B Jesus and were very impressed, and the rates were around $50-65 depending on number of people and the room. I posted two photos of it, a room and the lovely formal dining room, in the SMA Scenes album of our photo gallery. The rooms are small, and three are on the second floor and three are on the third floor, and on the roof is a comfortable lounge area with one of the best 360 degree views of San Miguel, the Parroquia looming impressively nearby. Our new friend staying there said the breakfasts and lunches were excellent, and having two meals a day included made the rates even cheaper.

Funny, in contrast recently I had a reason to check out the website for Casa Lisa, one of the most beautiful and expensive B & Bs in SMA, the one where Nirvana restaurant is in the front, on Mesones near Hernandez Macias and Nirvana serves their breakfasts. Wow! Rates were as high as $370! But that is for suites that would make you feel like a movie star or President.

We heard of another luxury B & B with no sign, only a discrete "M" on Chiquitos near where a friend just bought a house, and the B & B apparently doesn't want anyone casually peeking in. Rates there are $450 a night!

Casa Luna, built around preserved 16th century ruins from historic San Miguel, is a bargain in comparison with rooms that started at $138 last time I checked. I'll go back on their website and see today's rates in a minute. I love the flowery garden feel of the Pila Seca place and can verify their breakfasts are fantastic since I have had two there. (I just checked their website--rooms start at $140 today.)

When people have wanted a recommendation for a fairly low-cost B & B and they have children, I always recommend Mansion del Bosque because it is so close to the wonderful children's playground in Parque Juarez. The other good choice especially for families is Casa Crayola on Aurora which hosts summer kids' camps and utilizes crayon colors to create a lively feel.

These are B & Bs that come to my mind right away today. I have to disclose--I feel a kinship to Casa Luna because out of nowhere they put our book on their website and to Casa Maricela because Maricela's daughter is helping shepherd our new BBQ down from the States. (It should be arriving very soon!)

Default Casa Crayola

Casa Crayola is a nice and inexpensive choice during the fall, winter and spring before they have summer art classes.

Reyna's B&B is an incredible deal! $55 a night which includes two meals! Reyna is a wonderful cook and host. Her B&B is located in the safe neighborhood of Guadiana.

If Casa Luna is in the budget, I think there is no better place to stay. I can't say enough wonderful things about Diane, the owner, and her fabulous staff.

Default B&B's in SMA

I just spent three weeks at Casa de Reyna B&B, and I can't say enough good things about it. Reyna is a gourmet cook, the house and rooms--each with private bath--are lovely. What a bargain! My room with two scrumptious meals was only $55/night! Easy walking distance to El Jardín. Check her out at:

I just looked at a map on the hotel website and it appears to be quite a distance from the El Jardin, 5-6 blocks. Is this correct?

Default B&Bs in SMA

We just stayed at Casa de Reyna's and it is indeed a very nice place with good meals and gracious host. Our room rate for 1 night for 2 people was $90 USD. It is a good walk to the El Jardin, perhaps 6-8 blocks but not difficult.

We just spent a night at the delightful Casa de Reyna and it was wonderful. It certainly is more than 3 blocks to Centro however, more like 8 -10 but it is fairly flat and quite walkable. We paid $95 for 2 people for 1 night.

If this little walk is too much then maybe SMA is not the place for you. Actually, every walk in San Miguel is delightful no matter how long or short because that's what people do here....walk. The fresh (pollution-free) air, the charming sights and very friendly people along the way. Probably the walk will do you good and hopefully you'll be glad you did it.
