Default B&Bs in SMA

Hi, I have been searching the forum for a recent post that listed a number of reasonably priced B&Bs in SMA, most of which were in centro. However, I can't seem to find it. Does anyone have this list or can provide some recommendations? I'd like to keep the price below $100 USD per night. Thanks so much.

Default It was on our SMA FAQs page on the website

I've copied my hotel recommendations below from our SMA FAQs section, but I also want to recommend a forum member's website, link below, that has an excellent hotels section.

The one thing that www.tripadvisor.com does shine at is hotel recommendations, though mostly higher end places, so you could also do a search there.

Donna's webpage:

If the full link doesn't come through, here's a shorter version of the link, though it will take longer to come up:

Donna has an updated list of inexpensive hotels on her site, including with photos (great job, Donna) at:

http://www.experience-san-miguel-de-...e-allende.html

And here are my recommendations from my SMA FAQs:

Q 11: Do you have any favorite inexpensive San Miguel hotels?

We haven't stayed in any of these ourselves but friends have told us about them. They run $25-60. There are even aa couple of hostals in Centro that cost maybe $12 a night. One is Hostal Alcatraz, Relox 54, 152-8543.

The Hotel Sautto is one of the oldest establishments in SMA, the Sautto family being one of the original families from Spain that settled the area, and its courtyard was the backdrop for the baptismal scene in "And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself." Rooms are worn but comfortable, and the hotel is the closest to the Jardin of the inexpensive ones. Singles are as low as $40 a night, depending on the season, and there are a few kitchenettes. They're hard to contact and don't take credit cards. An upscale Italian dinner restaurant is on the premises and several breakfast places are within a block or two. Teatro Angela Peralta is across the street. Hotel Sautto, Hernandez Macias 59, 152-0051. It takes dogs and has security parking.

Las Monjas is a favorite of many people, with 64 rooms in many sizes--if one you're shown is dark ask if there is another with better lighting. It's down a hill a couple of blocks west of the Jardin, and they take credit cards. It's around $40 a night for a single. There's a restaurant and bar as well. Las Monjas means "the nuns," and the Las Monjas church and convent are nearby on Canal, adjoining Belles Artes which has many classes by the month open to visitors. Hotel Posada de las Monjas, Canal 37, 152-0171.

Parador de San Sabastian is across the street from the Academia Hispano Americana, one of the Spanish language institutes which offers intensive instruction. No credit cards or restaurant. Lovely courtyard. Parking in rear. Hotel Parador de San Sebastian, Mesones 7, 152-7084.

La Quinta Loreto also takes dogs and has parking, and it has some lovely apartments and casas for long-term residents, though there's a long waiting list. It takes credit cards and has a comfort food restaurant for breakfast and lunch on the beautiful spacious grounds Calle de Loreto 15, tucked in by the Artisans Alley, 152-0042.

The Hotel La Siesta has 29 hotel rooms as well as the RV park--see next FAQ.
....
Q 13: Can you recommend any hotels in the $60-100 a night range?

A: Hotels that I have heard good things about in the $60-100 a night range include:

Posada San Francisco, Plaza Principal 2, 152-7213, www.naftaconnect.com/hsanfrancisco (right on the Jardin in Centro, two restaurants and bar and other services in courtyard, my number one pick).

Casa Calderoni B & B, Callejon del Pueblito 4A, 154-6007, www.casacalderoni.com (Owner is an artist and each room has the theme of a different artist).

La Mansion del Bosque, Aldama 65, 152-0277, www.infosma.com/mansion. (Ruth, the owner, has been in SMA something like 40 years and has a cookbook of her wonderful recipes from her restaurant, and it's right on Park Juarez).

Hotel Posada Carmina, Cuna de Allende 7, 152-0458, www.posadacarmina.com.

Mansion Virreyes Hotel, Canal 19, 152-3355, e-mail mansionvirreyes@prodigy.net.mx .

Default Casa Crayola

First time in SMA we stayed at a top end Casa La Cuesta. Nice but pricey.
This year we stayed at Casa Crayola (48 Aurroa).
Carly, the owner, runs an art school for students in the summer but for the rest of the year she rent out charming castitas that are nice in a love space and inexpensive.
Google the name the name and you'll see the info.

Default Mansion del Bosque

I can heartily recommend Mansion del Bosque; my partner and I stayed there for a week in August. A little village by itself, it is very comfortable and close to El Jardin. It's a bit old-fashioned, but that's part of its charm. Good linens, not elaborate laces and decorations, wonderful food in the restaurant. And Ruth Hyba is a treasure.

Default Inexpensive B&B's in Centro

I'm a little late posting this reply, but I notice that the original question was for B&B's, not hotels (big difference, and as a former B&B owner I can attest to that fact).

I'm not enamoured of any of Carol's suggestions for hotels (sorry, Carol) but I'm surprised that no one offered Casa Campos (Maricela's B&B) at Jesus 41B. Just as close to the Jardin (block and a half), her lovely (in fact, gorgeous) rooms run $65/night for 2 people, and that includes !! breakfast and a gourmet, home-made Mexican comida. So that price is certainly comparable to the $40/single price and really a much better value.

I've known Maricela Campos since her rooms were $35; her success has prompted the increase in price, but guests are still thrilled and delighted with her charming B&B. I've sent quite a few people there over the years and they've all loved it.

She would welcome a visit if you wanted to check it out.

Emma,
Thanks for the heads-up on Casa Campos. I am about to add a B&B section to my hotels directory that Carol mentioned earlier in this thread. I did not have info on Maricela's place, so I'm glad for the addition.

Thanks,
Donna

Casa Luna is a bit above the price range mentioned, but I love Casa Luna. Before Don and I had our own casa in SMA, the Casa Luna on Pila Seca was our home in San Miguel. What a beautiful, well-managed establishment. I love the view stepping inside the wall. Take a look at the website.

Sometimes (not often, but sometimes) I wish we didn't have our little house and we were still guests there.

Default Casa Calderoni

We just returned from SMA and had a wonderful stay at Casa Calderoni. We enjoyed our room, the Matisse suite, and received much personal attention and kindness from Luis, the General Manager, as well as everyone on staff.

I would recommend this B&B to anyone visiting San Miguel. This was our first visit to SMA and we look forward to returning. A wonderful experience!

Default Maricelas B&B

Hello

I am staying at Maricela`s NOW (using her computer) and I would HIGHLY recommend her B&B. She is a wonderful hostess, the staff is muy amable, meals are wonderful and her home is beautiful and a couple of blocks from el jardin...the view from her roof top terrace is the most beautiful I have seen in SMA.

The price of her rooms includes a full breakfast in the morning and a comida grande at 2 PM. Hard to beat!

Daniela
