Default Cheapest and best would be Hospital General

Downside: few staffers at Hospital General speak any English. She'd have a bed in a ward, no privacy. But she'd get as good care as she'd likely get in many US hospitals.

Norma had a horrible experience in an LA hospital until they figured out she had insurance and suddenly her meals were better, she got all the blankets she asked for, the nurses' attitudes got better, etc.

She could go to de la Fe here in SMA and it would cost much more--to be admitted for a surgery you have to put down 15,000 pesos deposit, about $1,350 USD. The total bill would be far less than $10,000 USD but I don't know how much less.

A large determinant of the cost would be if she could have the surgery done laporoscopically rather than a wide abdominal cut.

If you want the best care there are several private hospitals in Querétaro (Hospital Angeles, Hospital San Jose, and the new Hospital Tecnologia or a similar name) and in Celaya that are considered excellent. They wouldn't cost $10,000 but they would be more than the SMA choices.

When you get here, I'd go to the gynecologist in Hospital de la Fe and see what she says about the pros and cons of each hospital. She'd push de la Fe, of course, but you could probably get a lot of info from her. And then I'd go to Hospital General with a Spanish speaker to see what you could find out.

Has she thoroughly investigated the choices in your US area? If you can get into a university hospital as an emergency--severe pain, fever--you might be able to get a much lower price. They pretty much have to take you if you're an emergency.

Are there county hospitals near you? Any way she could get onto Medicaid temporarily with proof of low income? I had no health insurance in LA, MI and AZ for 12 years (why we had no savings left) and we used to know how to squeeze into whatever programs were available.

Check with any kind of community service agencies, free clinics, health care government programs, local hospitals if you can find a friendly soul in Admitting who can make suggestions, etc.

Actually the personal care and attention she'd get in Mexico would be better than in many US hospitals, but maybe she can get the operation through some program there. Worth checking into.

Good luck,

Carol Schmidt

Thanks for answering Carol. She has tried everything including free clinics, emergencies, programs but they send her in round abouts. She is tired of it. She has no insurance, but has a little savings and was wondering surgery price in SMA. Thanks for all the information.

Probably I'm way too late to be posting to this question, but I want to vouch for the Hospital de la Fe. I broke my arm in SMA last November and required surgery (two pins). The whole bill was less that $1500. We were in and out of there in about four hours. The surgery was on November 2, a holiday in Mexico. Two doctors came in for me. My arm has healed perfectly.

Default At Hospital General the bill would have been much less

A friend is choosing to have a major elective surgery at de la Fe soon and she's been told the total price will be about $10,000 USD. I know from past checking that the same surgery in the US would run at least four times that.

Default Link To Hospital Tec 100 Queretaro

Here is a link - the site is in Spanish but there are many English speaking people on the medical staff. If you email them or call them ask for an English speaker.

http://www.medicatec100.com.mx/

PS If you search Hospital Tec 100 Queretaro in google you can translate the page - and the website into English, it works I tried it.

Default Tech 100 is reputed to be the best hospital in the region now

This new hospital is also supposed to cost less than Hospital Angeles, formerly considered the best hospital in the region. Check it out.
